GOSHEN, N.Y. -- It's a family affair at Sweet Tymes in Goshen.

Local resident David Seligmann may be the one you see at the retro-styled candy shop but it's his 12-year-old daughter, Annelise, who helps with the buying (and tasting) and his wife, Irene Vecchi, who makes the fudge.

Seligmann, a self-described foodie, said he was looking to start his own business and "do something different" after a long career in hospitality. After much research, he decided on a candy store. After all, he said, whatever mood people may be in when they walk into the shop, they always leave with a smile.

Sweet Tymes opened in July 2016 and life -- pardon the pun -- has been "sweet" ever since.

The shop, in the heart of town, is more than a candy store.

"It's an old-fashioned sweet shop," he said.

To that end, there's an entire wall of nostalgia-inspired candy, dating to a favorite from 1912 and retro jars that hark back to quieter, simpler times (sensing a nod to the store's name?).

Seligmann, aka "The Candy Man," said he's always open to finding new "old" candies for customers as he adds (and hunts) for products.

There's also a big section of mix and match candies with over 100 different varieties, as well as the aforementioned fudge. Expect about 24 fudge flavors on a given day in classic and seasonal options. Among the choices: chocolate, dark chocolate with walnut, pumpkin praline, apple pie, pumpkin cheesecake and carrot cake.

"My wife works a full-time job and travels the country but she still loves to come home and make the fudge," he said. "We're both big into cooking."

An added fudge bonus: it's gluten-free. "The carrot cake tastes just like carrot cake," he said.

Sweet Tymes also carries Jane's ice cream. Gift baskets and corporate offerings are a big part of the store's business as is community building and a sense of fun.

For the second year in a row, Seligmann will turn the store into a friendly haunted house and staff will dress in costume. Look for the new decor sometime in the next week and a half.

Sweet Tymes is at 159 West Main St., 845-360-5989, www.sweettymes.com/ .
