The utility provider said it will prioritize shutting off service to accounts with the highest and oldest past due balances. The announcement comes on the heels of an accusation by advocacy group Public Service Commission that the company was targeting customers who owed smaller amounts, the Record reported.

PSC said Central Hudson was shutting off service to accounts who owed an average of $871 versus the state average of over $1,000. PSC also said Central Hudson had a higher rate of shut off – 4.3 percent versus the state average of 3.1percent, the Record said.
