Defense Specialist: Baby Heil Died From Pneumonia, Strokes

GOSHEN, N.Y. – A neuropathologist called by Michael Heil's defense team in his murder trial testified he believes baby Zachary Heil's fatal brain and eye bleeds were the results of viral pneumonia and strokes – not child abuse, according to the Times Herald-Record.

A medical expert took the stand in Michael Heil's defense on Tuesday and said baby Zachary could have died from pneumonia.

Dr. Roland Auer, of Canada, was the defense's final witness on Tuesday. He had testified earlier in the trial, but took the stand again to reiterate his opinion. Prosecutors have also called medical experts to the stand who believe baby Zachary was the victim of fatal abuse on the night of Aug. 7 2016, when Michael Heil was alone with the child, the Record reported.

Jurors will begin to hear closing statements on Wednesday, the Record said.
