ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y. – The referendum that would allow Kiryas Joel to break from the Town of Monroe to create the Town of Palm Tree was approved by Orange County Legislators on Thursday night, according to the Times Herald-Record.
Legislators and residents spoke out for more than two hours at the meeting before the measure was put to vote. In the end, the measure passed by an overwhelming 18-3 majority, the Record reported.
Kiryas Joel's break from Monroe and creation of Palm Tree has one more hurdle to clear: Voters must approve the measure during the general election on Nov. 7.
