Earlier this week, SUNY Orange President Kristine Young confirmed that the college had become aware of an anonymous threat of a potential shooting that would have happened on Thursday.

Young said the college was mentioned by name, but no other significant details were provided. The threat originated in the form of a text message and then circulated on social media.

Middletown police and security at the college continue investigating the threat and are developing information that will help identify the person responsible for making it. They determined the message’s originating phone number is not a working number.

Since the threat was made, additional officers from the department have been patrolling campus since the threat to ensure the safety of students.

“Unfortunately, incidents like this reinforce the need for all of us to remain ever vigilant regarding our own safety and the safety of those around us,” Young said. “We appreciate the wide-ranging outreach we received regarding this threat last night from various sources, both internal and external to the College.”

Anyone with information that may be relevant to the investigation into the threat is being asked to contact college security by calling (845) 341-4710 or the Middletown Police Department at (845) 343-3151.
