Eisenberg, a sixth grader at Monhagen Middle School, has launched a sock drive for the people at the homeless shelter run by Helping Others Needing Our Resources.
With his mother, Danielle, Logan would visit a gas station every week and encounter a man who would ask for spare change, who lived at a nearby shelter. One day the man wasn't there and it began a conversation with Logan and his mom about homeless people.
"He wanted to volunteer," Danielle said. "He got $100 from his grandparents for the holidays and he wanted to donate it to the shelter."
The Eisenbergs found out that socks are always in need at the shelter and used Facebook to spread the word, launching Operation Socks. Within three days, they had collected 150 pairs of socks and now have 840.
The drive has gone viral all over Middletown with people contacting the Eisenbergs to see how they could help. The Eisenbergs went shopping yesterday for 294 pairs of socks after people donate $250. People around the country are also collecting socks for their own shelters, Danielle said.
Overall, Logan hopes to collect 3,000 pairs of socks since the shelter serves about 3,000 people annually.
"I think it's great," Danielle said. "He has such a kind heart. We're very proud of him. He's a really great kid and he's learning that an idea you throw out there can have a lot of interest."
Socks can be dropped off at the Eisenbergs house at 13 Wilkin Avenue in Middletown or where Danielle works at Pets Alive 363 Derby Road in Walkill.
