30-Plus Injured In Explosion, Fire At New Windsor Cosmetics Plant

NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. – The explosion and fire at Verla International in New Windsor has left at least 30 injured, including seven City of Newburgh firemen, the New Windsor Police Department said. 

The first explosion, which occurred at the north end of the factory, was heard at approximately 10:15 Monday morning. When emergency crews arrived, employees had evacuated the building, officials said.

Vails Gate Fire Department and numerous mutual aid fire Departments responded including City of Newburgh FD. 

A secondary explosion occurred in the factory just after 10:30 a.m. 

Injured victims were taken to St. Luke's Cornwall for treatment. One firefighter was taken Westchester Medical Center for burn treatment. All injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening, New Windsor officials said. 

The Orange County Department of Emergency Management is requesting all area residents within a half a mile of the Verla International factory shelter in place with windows closed.
