KIRYAS JOEL, N.Y. – A Kiryas Joel man will spend at least 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from an alleged plot to kidnap and murder another member of the community who wouldn't give his wife a divorce, according to the Times Herald-Record.
Shimen Liebowitz, 26, along with two other men reportedly paid a private investigator $55,000 to coerce a fellow Hasidic man to grant his wife a religious divorce consent. The investigator Liebowitz and his associates paid recorded their conversations and turned them over to the FBI, the Record said.
Both prosecutors and defense attorneys have asked the judge to stay within the typical sentencing guidelines of 33 to 41 months, not including time served. Liebowitz is scheduled for sentencing in November, the Record reported.
