Rebate Checks Are On Way For Eligible New Yorkers More than two million state rebate checks are in the process of being mailed to eligible New Yorkers by the state Department of Taxation and Finance, lohud.com reports. It could be weeks or months before all checks are sent, the story says. The process is slow since it’s linked to school and property tax caps. Oakland Tree Lighting Includes Surprise Entertainment OAKLAND, N.J. — The annual Christmas tree and menorah lighting ceremony takes place Dec. 6 at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Oakland. Surprise guests will perform at the food and entertainment event that follows the lightings. The public is welcome to bring cameras to the occasion, which takes place in the Valley Middle School Cafeteria. Over 35,000 Turkey Meals Donated By New York And Area Corporations Extra food was on Thanksgiving tables this year thanks to the generosity of state leaders and major corporations in New York. More than 35,000 meals were distributed Thanksgiving week to people in need statewide when New York State partnered with Walmart, Wegmans, the National Supermarket Association, Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo and FreshDirect. Each meal included turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, vegetables, cranberry sauce and potatoes. Putnam Sheriff Searches For Man Wanted On Rape Charges PUTNAM, N.Y. -- A man wanted for questioning on rape charges is at large and police are asking for the public's help, the Putnam County Sheriff's Department says. A Superior Court arrest warrant dating Oct. 30, 2006 alleges Jose M. Tapia, 39, was involved with 1st degree rape, contempt, weapon possession and menacing. He is described as a male hispanic with black hair and brown eyes, 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 225 pounds. Anyone with information on Tapia's whereabouts is asked to call (845) 808-4357.

Brewster Students Fill Baskets With Thanksgiving Treats For Putnam BREWSTER, N.Y. — Over 400 Thanksgiving Day baskets were filled by high school students for donation to an antipoverty service in Brewster. Volunteers from Brewster Central High School conducted a food drive and made the Thanksgiving donation to the Putnam Community Action Program. Woman Dies After Crashing Into Bus Near Ramapo High School RAMAPO, N.Y. — A woman died of injuries after slamming into an empty commercial bus Wednesday night on Viola Road near Ramapo High School, lohud.com reports. Thanksgiving Is About Togetherness, Says Survey Whether you’re cooking in the kitchen or eating around the table, togetherness is what Thanksgiving is all about, a survey commissioned by Country Crock says.
