Fort Lee's Queen Of Salsa Explored By Telemundo
FORT LEE, N.J. -- The life and times of Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, who died in her Fort Lee home of a brain tumor in 2003, is being explored by Spanish-language network Telemundo in an 80-part series, the Washington Post reports. The station began airing "Celia," on Tuesday, says the Washington Post, and the fictionalized story spans her 1925 Havana birth, to her death at age 77. Paterson Man Sentenced In $1M Heroin Trafficking Bust
PASSAIC, N.J. -- Ronald Carter, 38, of Paterson, will serve 12.5 to 26 years in state prison for trafficking more than $1 million worth of heroin, according to nj.com. He was sentenced Tuesday in Monroe County, Pa. for a January 2014 incident in which police stopped the rental car he was riding in and found about 65,000 individual packets of heroin in the truck, packaged for sale, nj.com reports. Decision Delayed On New Hempstead's Matterhorn Nursery
NEW HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – A special meeting to discuss possible changes to zoning laws in New Hempstead, that had been set for Monday, Oct. 26 at Village Hall is cancelled, according to the village's website. Changes to zoning laws could affect the fate of the 34-acre property at 227 Summit Park Road purchased in July 2014 by New Jersey businessman Joseph Kazarnovsky, who formed Summit Hempstead LLC, lohud.com reports. No Rockland County Taxes Used For Buses Added To Fleet
CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. -- Four new buses are now in service in Rockland County's Transport of Rockland (TOR) fleet. The total cost for the purchase of the four buses, related equipment and warranties is approximately $1.5 million, County Executive Ed Day announced. No Rockland County tax dollars were used to purchase the vehicles. The bus purchase was made using 80 percent Federal Transit Administration funds, 10 percent New York State Department of Transportation dollars and 10 percent local transportation funds. Redding Elementary School Mourns Staff Member Killed In Crash
REDDING, Conn. -- Redding Elementary School teacher Deborah Grockowski was killed in a one-car crash Sunday in Bethlehem, Conn., state police said. Grockowski, 62, of Bethlehem, was driving a 2012 Subaru Forester about 4 p.m. when the car flipped onto its roof near 82 Main St., according to police. Police said she wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car and died at the scene. Police Charge Suffern Man With DWI In Ramapo Crash
RAMAPO, N.Y. – Jonathan Elwell, 33, of Suffern, was charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident on Thursday, on Route 202 near Viola Road, lohud.com reports. The head-on crash at 12:48 a.m. closed Route 202 for nearly six hours and sent one man to the hospital with serious injuries, lohud.com says.
